Description
Manpu Gama’s Kohiki sake cup has a soft, delicate surface. A thin layer of dark, iron-rich clay is applied over the light local clay, then covered with a white slip. Where the darker layer shows through, it creates subtle variations across the surface, from white to deep grey, with the faintest touches of pink.
The form is precisely crafted, with a perfectly rounded profile. Exceptionally light, the sake cup sits comfortably in the hand, while the slightly fuller rim provides a crisp finish.
Inside, the characteristic spiral marks of Manpu Gama’s wheel work remain visible. The kiln’s signature can be found on the underside.
Capacity: approx. 40 – 50 ml
Manpu Gama is a family-run pottery studio nestled in the mountains of Zao, Miyagi, Japan. The studio creates Zao-yaki using locally sourced and carefully selected clays, with each piece shaped by its sense of place, material and carefully controlled firing processes. The work ranges from wood-fired pieces made in the Anagama kiln to distinctive glazed works in rich, deep blues.
