Description
The rust-coloured Yakishime sake cup by Manpu Gama is defined by softly rounded forms. Fine grooves across the surface reveal the work on the potter’s wheel and give the piece a distinct handcrafted character. The understated foot creates balanced proportions. The cup sits comfortably in the hand.
Fired in an Anagama kiln, the wood firing creates fine Goma markings—natural ash deposits that resemble sesame seeds. Their golden nuances contrast with the reddish, rust-coloured Shigaraki clay. This deep, warm colouring develops during the firing process through Yōhen, the natural colour variations that occur during wood firing.
Capacity: approx. 40 – 50 ml
Manpu Gama is a family-run pottery studio nestled in the mountains of Zao, Miyagi, Japan. The studio creates Zao-yaki using locally sourced and carefully selected clays, with each piece shaped by its sense of place, material and carefully controlled firing processes. The work ranges from wood-fired pieces made in the Anagama kiln to distinctive glazed works in rich, deep blues.
