MANPU GAMA Kohiki Sake Cup – Free Form

Description

Kohiki is one of the signature styles in the Manpu Gama studio’s repertoire. This asymmetrical, free-form Kohiki sake cup has a delicate yet richly layered surface created through several layers of clay and slip. A thin layer of dark, locally sourced Zao clay is first applied to the light clay body, followed by a white slip. Where the darker layer shows through, it creates subtle variations ranging from white through different shades of grey to delicate touches of pink.

The form of this guinomi is deliberately asymmetrical. A gentle indentation along the rim provides a natural resting place for the thumb. It is precisely this subtle departure from perfect symmetry that gives the cup its individual character and evokes the quiet aesthetic of Wabi-Sabi. Despite its free-form shape, it feels light and comfortable in the hand.

Inside, the movement of the potter’s wheel remains visible in a delicate spiral. The underside bears the Manpu Gama signature, offering a direct reminder of the piece’s handcrafted origins.

Manpu Gama is a family-run pottery studio nestled in the mountains of Zao, Miyagi, Japan. The studio creates Zao-yaki using locally sourced and carefully selected clays, with each piece shaped by its sense of place, material and carefully controlled firing processes. The work ranges from wood-fired pieces made in the Anagama kiln to distinctive glazed works in rich, deep blues.
