Description
Fire has left a distinctive mark on this small Manpu Gama Yakishime sake cup, with delicate traces of ash scattered across the surface. Like all of Toyohara Manpu’s guinomi, it is finely formed and remarkably light, with the distinctive shape characteristic of the studio.
In the Anagama kiln, the cup was exposed to a particularly strong flow of natural ash. The ash has almost completely enveloped the surface, leaving striking yellow accents across the front. Inside, the ash glaze has gathered along the wheel-thrown pattern, forming a glass-like layer that shifts in colour with the light.
On the underside, the signature “Man” and the three marks left by the firing supports are clearly visible. Excess ash glaze, which developed into subtle blue tones in places, was carefully removed and then complemented with Kintsugi.
Capacity: approx. 40 – 50 ml
Manpu Gama is a family-run pottery studio nestled in the mountains of Zao, Miyagi, Japan. The studio creates Zao-yaki using locally sourced and carefully selected clays, with each piece shaped by its sense of place, material and carefully controlled firing processes. The work ranges from wood-fired pieces made in the Anagama kiln to distinctive glazed works in rich, deep blues.
