Description

In contrast to European aesthetics, asymmetrical forms are often preferred in Japan. Spontaneous yet balanced designs convey a natural sense of harmony. To give this vase an even more informal character, the base was not trimmed in the usual way, but simply cut free by hand.
This small vase was crafted from black, iron-rich coarse clay, which reveals a subtle reddish hue after firing. The simple yet playful decoration in white engobe brings the vase to life — perfect for a single blossom.

Isegahama Toubou – Tomokiyo Kunio

In the early 1980s, Tomokiyo Kunio established his workshop in Hyuga, on the southern island of Kyushu. Shaped by the sea and nature, his functional ceramics have a distinctly rugged character. His time in Mashiko and Kasama—both renowned pottery centres for glazed ceramics—can be seen in his skilful use of a wide range of glazes.
