Description
Ito Chiho’s Kuro-Oribe jug is a katakuchi in the Oribe style for sake. The geometric form of the vessel, originally wheel-thrown, is in perfect balance with the spout.
As the name suggests, the jug is finished in a black (kuro) glaze. The characteristic open area with white engobe is decorated like a canvas with various geometric and nature-inspired patterns.
The Kuro-Oribe jug was wheel-thrown from local Seto clay with a small amount of Shigaraki clay, before being bisque-fired at 700°C in a gas kiln. It was then completed in a glaze firing at 1240°C.
