Description
The form of these Kirameki fan-shaped plates from Ito Chiho is an integral part of kaiseki tableware served during the ceremonial banquet of Japanese tea ceremonies. Ito Chiho’s pieces radiate a calm elegance, enhanced by geometric precious-metal appliqués.
The white, locally sourced Seto clay is tinted with iron oxide, and the Japanese wagara patterns are delicately hand-engraved using a needle. Ito Chiho uses platinum, silver, and gold as overglaze decoration, giving the collection its name “Kirameki” (shine).
The interior is coated with her own Shikoku glaze. This glaze is based on manganese, iron oxide, and copper. Due to the reddish tint in the brown glaze, the bowls resemble lacquerware.
The Kirameki fan-shaped plates undergo three firing stages in a gas kiln: a first bisque firing at 700°C, a glaze firing at 1240°C, and a third firing at 750°C for the precious metal applications.
Ito Chiho founded her ceramics studio in Seto in 1999. Deeply rooted in the world of the tea ceremony, she draws inspiration from traditional styles such as Oribe ware. At the same time, she allows space for her own creativity, producing original designs.
