Description

The Mikan mukōzuke bowls by Suzuki Takashi from the Kōbō Daidai studio perfectly combine simplicity of form with the extravagance of colour.

Their clean, rounded form is accentuated by a wide rim, which highlights the depth and brilliance of the Mikan Kaiyū glaze. The subtle notch at the edge enhances the captivating turquoise-blue interplay of the glaze, giving each Mikan mukōzuke bowl a distinctive aesthetic.

Mikan Kaiyū Glaze:

For his Mikan Kaiyū ash-glaze creations, Suzuki Takashi uses a special blend of different clay types. The light tone and slightly granular texture of the clay provide the ideal base for the Mikan ash glaze.

This glaze is made from the ash of citrus tree branches. “Mikan” means clementine or mandarin in Japanese. When combined with iron, it produces a distinctive, shimmering turquoise blue that makes Suzuki Takashi’s work instantly recognisable.
The pieces are fired for over 18 hours in a gas kiln to achieve their final form and colour.

KŌBŌ DAIDAI – SUZUKI TAKASHI

Suzuki Takashi, a talented career changer, founded his studio Kōbō Daidai in Nebukawa in 2006. His refined celadon works are distinguished by their captivating depth of colour and subtle variations in tone.
The shimmering Mikan Kaiyū ash glaze, made from the ash of citrus trees, is a tribute to his roots and creates a striking contrast with the light clay of the ceramics.
