Description

Manpu Gama’s rust-coloured Yakishime sake cup has a cylindrical form reminiscent of a bamboo stalk. Subtle bulges and visible marks from the potter’s wheel reveal its handcrafted character and accentuate the contrast between the clay and natural ash deposits.

Made from Shigaraki clay, the cup was fired unglazed (Yakishime) for several days in an Anagama kiln. This intensive wood-firing process brings about natural colour variations known as Yōhen—in this case, lending the clay a delicate rust-red hue. Fine ash deposits have fused with the surface in places, giving it the subtle appearance of a delicate metallic patina.

Manpu Gama

Manpu Gama is a family-run pottery studio nestled in the mountains of Zao, Miyagi, Japan. The studio creates Zao-yaki using locally sourced and carefully selected clays, with each piece shaped by its sense of place, material and carefully controlled firing processes. The work ranges from wood-fired pieces made in the Anagama kiln to distinctive glazed works in rich, deep blues.
