Description

Baba Takashi’s background as a sculptor is fully expressed in this vase. This highly original piece is made from Bizen clay with a Shino glaze.
Bizen ceramics are traditionally known for their unglazed surfaces, as the local iron-rich clay is particularly well suited for this approach. However, Baba Takashi explores the material’s possibilities and has made Shino glaze his own. Rich in feldspar, this Mino-origin glaze from the Nagoya region is known for its lush consistency and its tones ranging from white to soft pink.
On the highly iron-rich clay body, the Shino glaze appears in greyish-blue hues, while its thick application simultaneously conveys a sense of warmth and strength.

In addition to the Shino glaze, natural firing effects from the noborigama wood kiln are also visible. The vase was fired on its side, allowing the natural ash glaze to form a dynamic pattern. It flows from the back across the entire length toward the front in white to slightly greenish tones, where it gathers into fascinating turquoise “glaze eyes.”

Another distinctive feature is the two shell marks on the front. To allow side-firing without the vase sticking to the kiln floor, shells are often used as supports. After firing, they leave behind a delicate, random pattern.

The sculptural form of the vase further enhances its robust presence. The piece was first thrown on the wheel and then further developed like a sculpture, with geometric incisions and cut-outs. The base also conveys strength and character, featuring three evenly spaced feet arranged like a propeller. The unglazed underside reveals the rich reddish-brown tones of the Bizen clay.

BABA TAKASHI

Baba Takashi, the young ceramic sculptor from Bizen, is not reinventing Bizen pottery but continuing its evolution. Coming from a family of potters, Baba-san studied sculpture, an influence that is strongly reflected in his ceramics.
Through new forms that nonetheless remain functional, he aims to introduce a fresh impulse. He has also studied glazes in depth to bring greater intensity to the otherwise restrained natural tones of Bizen ware.
Highly experimental by nature, Baba-san seeks to unite two styles — Shino and Bizen. His creations reflect determination and strength, while at the same time conveying grace and harmony.
