Description

In keeping with the Wabi-Sabi aesthetic, this small Manpu Gama Yakishime sake cup has a deliberately free, organic form. Soft, rounded lines and visible marks from the potter’s wheel give the guinomi a warm, natural character and make it comfortable to hold.

The heavy accumulation of natural ash resembles a Shizen-yū, or natural glaze, lending the surface a remarkable depth. Kintsugi traces can be found on the base, where an excess of ash glaze had pooled and was carefully ground back. This Zao-yaki guinomi brings together the quiet beauty of the clay with the elemental force of fire.

The sake cup was fired over four days in Manpu Gama’s Anagama wood firing, an exceptional firing carried out only once every two years.

Manpu Gama

Manpu Gama is a family-run pottery studio nestled in the mountains of Zao, Miyagi, Japan. The studio creates Zao-yaki using locally sourced and carefully selected clays, with each piece shaped by its sense of place, material and carefully controlled firing processes. The work ranges from wood-fired pieces made in the Anagama kiln to distinctive glazed works in rich, deep blues.
