Description

Hayashi Yuka’s Shino chawan tea bowls, together with her guinomi sake cups, are her signature pieces. Deeply rooted in the Shino tradition of the Mino region, they are distinguished by a characteristic generous, warm feldspar glaze.

At the same time, the aesthetic language is deliberately reduced and contemporary. The wabi-sabi-inspired silhouette of the tea bowl combines with a minimalist decoration of geometric, yet intentionally irregular stripes. These are created using iron-oxide brushwork and give the matcha tea bowl a calm, modern expressiveness.

Made from local light or ochre-coloured clay, the glaze develops an elegant interplay of soft grey and pink tones. Characteristic of high-quality Shino ware are also the fine, needle-like pinholes in the glaze, known as yuzuhada (柚肌), which give the surface a lively, subtly textured depth.

This pink Shino chawan tea bowl is fired in a gas kiln, which allows precise temperature control and, unlike a traditional anagama kiln, produces no ash deposition. The kiln is intentionally only partially loaded to ensure optimal heat circulation and to bring out the characteristic effects of the Shino glaze. Overall, the ceramic is fired three times, including two firings at temperatures of up to 1180°C. The result is a durably vitrified, everyday-usable matcha tea bowl for the tea ceremony.

Each tea bowl is delivered in a signed paulownia wood box.
