Description

This grey-toned Shino chawan tea bowl by Hayashi Yuka is a contemporary interpretation of classical Shino ware from the Mino region. The piece combines a reduced aesthetic language with a complex, layered glaze surface, while remaining deeply rooted in the tradition of the Japanese tea ceremony.

Beneath the translucent white feldspar glaze, the dark clay body specially developed by Hayashi Yuka becomes visible. The clear, minimalist form of the Shino matcha tea bowl provides a calm framework for a compelling interplay between material and surface. Generous areas of pale glaze meet the deep, dark clay body, creating a precise visual contrast across varying tones of white, grey, and black.
During firing, the glaze breaks open in places, revealing the surface beneath. Fine cracks and openings expose the dark clay, forming a layered, almost landscape-like structure. Rather than reading as a closed coating, the glaze appears as a living, evolving surface that generates depth and subtle movement.

This refined, poetic tea bowl is fired in a gas kiln under precise temperature control, without the ash deposition typical of a traditional anagama kiln. The kiln is intentionally loaded sparsely to ensure even heat circulation, supporting the controlled breaking of the Shino glaze and enhancing the contrast with the dark clay body.

The ceramic is fired three times, including two firings at up to 1180°C. This process creates a dense, stable surface and results in a durable, everyday-usable matcha tea bowl for the tea ceremony.

Each tea bowl is delivered in a signed paulownia wood box.
