Description

Kimura Hajime excavates the clay for his vases himself, and he also prepares his ash-based glazes personally. As only natural materials are used, which react differently in the firing process, each piece is inherently unique. The clay, glaze, and heat continually interact in subtle and ever-changing ways during firing.

This vase is no exception. Here, the clay and glaze reveal a deep brown tone, due to a higher iron content and a more generous application of Kimura-san’s Ko-Mino glaze, his own creation, as can be seen in the flowing glaze traces at the base.

The Shinogi technique—the sculpturally carved form—allows the glaze to gather along the ridges and create tonal contrasts. This further enhances the sculptural presence of the vase.

The vase is delivered in a custom-made paulownia wood box.

KIMURA HAJIME

Coming from a long pottery tradition and representing the sixth generation of his family, Kimura Hajime has drawn upon this savoir-faire and his passion to create his two signature glazes: Ko-Mino and Ruri-Mino, both inspired by the highly esteemed Ki-Seto glaze. These glazes are distinguished by the depth of their colour and their lively, snowflake-like patterns, which lend each piece a fresh and vibrant appearance.
