Description

Rupert Grottenthaler’s square “ember rose” vase was fired in the smoke-free Sasukenei kiln. It was also positioned between the firebox and the firing chamber, allowing embers to collect around it from the fire burning down from above in the Bourry box. This distinctive feature of the Sasukenei kiln produces unique diagonal landscapes of colour and texture.

The embers leave a strong textural surface in the lower section, while the middle area shows koge burn marks with a partly matte and glossy black surface that contrasts with the lighter ash deposition on the upper part. In this way, the fire leaves behind a compelling interplay of colour and texture.

The opening of the vase has partially melted at the high firing temperatures (shinshoku), leaving delicate, filigree-like tips that also evoke rugged mountain peaks.

Each side of Rupert Grottenthaler’s square “ember rose” vase presents a unique landscape, revealing something new at every glance, where the creatively destructive force of nature comes to the fore.
