Description

Rupert Grottenthaler’s small kiln “tears” vase carries a poetic name derived from the beautiful patterns of natural ash deposition in wood firing. The vase was placed horizontally in the kiln, allowing the ash glaze to accumulate on the back and then flow toward the front, forming tear-like shapes—referred to as “eyes” in Japanese.
To keep the piece in a horizontal position and prevent it from sticking to the kiln shelves, it was supported on seashells, traces of which are still visible on the surface.

Rupert Grottenthaler’s small kiln “tears” vase was formed from Westerwald clay and evokes characteristic Shigaraki vessels. It was then fired in a smoke-free Sasukenei wood kiln. The Westerwald clay interacts exceptionally well with ash from spruce and walnut wood, producing a wide range of colour variations and organic surface patterns that invite endless visual exploration.

Rupert Grottenthaler built the smoke-free Sasukenei wood-fired kiln in Nandlstadt in 2008. His ceramics combine the drama of fire with Bavarian technique and Japanese aesthetics.
