Description

Rupert Grottenthaler’s square tubular vase with blue ash deposition resembles a dancing blossom opening in the wind. The interplay of colour and texture is striking in its variety, especially the rich bluish-turquoise tones and the slightly rough surface in some areas. Both were created through natural ash deposition in the smoke-free Sasukenei kiln.

The opening of the square tubular vase shows the beginnings of shinshoku—erosion caused by the high kiln temperatures. However, it is far less pronounced than in the “ember rose” ceramics. On the base of the vase, traces of the kiln supports are still visible.

Rupert Grottenthaler built the smoke-free Sasukenei wood-fired kiln in Nandlstadt in 2008. His ceramics combine the drama of fire with Bavarian technique and Japanese aesthetics.
