Description

Rupert Grottenthaler’s large kiln “tears” vase was fired in a smoke-free Sasukenei kiln. The natural ash deposition leaves an impressive and powerful pattern on the vessel, which is placed horizontally in the kiln. The ash glaze flows together at the front into glass eyes, which Rupert poetically calls “kiln tear”. In the light they even reveals bluish accents.

Because of the high-temperature firing, the glaze streaks also display a range of tonal variations, at times resembling koge—fire marks—or glossy brown nuances. Their symmetry enhances the work’s dramatic visual impact.

Also visible on the front are the impressions of sea shells that served as supports during firing. Their presence, together with the form of the vase, recalls characteristic Shigaraki creations from Japan.

Rupert Grottenthaler’s large kiln “tears” vase was formed from a blend of Deggendorf and Westerwald clay bodies, giving it its intense dark character.
